Why Music Lessons Are Important Right Now

Why Are Music Lessons Important During This Challenging Time?

Many of you are wondering if it’s better to continue lessons or take a break until school resumes. There are several benefits that music lessons can bring your child, which are especially important during this time of social distancing and isolation.

Music stimulates brain development in children

We can all agree that the kids have probably been watching a lot of TV or playing games to kill time and they can use a little brain stimulation. A study at Northwestern University found better neural processing in students who played a musical instrument when they were compared with students who simply listened to music. When compared with students who didn’t take any music lessons, musically-engaged students had more improvements in IQ subtests, index scores, and a standardized measure of academic achievement. Music education is also a great way to enhance reading comprehension abilities in children.

Music integrates many different subjects

Music lessons will also give them the opportunity to work on their math skills, reading and writing skills, science skills, and history knowledge. For example, time signatures in music are an excellent way to incorporate fractions, and lyric analysis and songwriting will allow students to work on their reading abilities. It’s good to keep the brain working on these subjects so that their return to school will be an easier transition.

Music teaches discipline

Music will also teach children to develop time management skills and discipline. Since students are expected to learn their instruments and practice outside of lessons, they will develop the ability to create a practice schedule and balance every other activity they have going on in their lives.

Music can relieve stress

Studies have found that music can reduce burnout and improve mood states. Whether you or your child is stressed about the amount of work they’re going to need to do to catch up at school or just stress from being stuck at home all day, every day; music lessons can relieve that anxiety and stress you and your child may be feeling. Lessons can also help take their mind off of all the fear and negativity they’re feeling about this challenging time, and help them focus on a goal-oriented subject.
